DSISD student, Cassandra K., was awarded the 2018 Breaking Traditions Award from the Michigan Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education. The award recognizes students who excel in a technical education program that is considered nontraditional for their gender and who make a contribution toward increasing awareness of nontraditional career options.Cassandra was selected from a field of over 70 applicants for this award statewide. She completed two years of machining at the ISD and learned how to operate CNC mills, lathes, drill presses and hydraulic saws. She said she signed up for the class to try something a little out of her comfort zone that would challenge her, and help open up additional career options after graduation. Cassandra said “I had to gain my respect and recognition just like any other student in the class, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.” Cassandra will attend Bay College or Lake Superior State University in the fall to pursue a wildlife fisheries or wildlife technician career.
